Meta will make Ray-Ban smart glasses with displays
Ray-Ban smart glasses will have meta displays by 2025

A recently-released report indicates that Meta wants to add small screens to its Ray-Ban smart glasses as soon as the latter part of 2025. The company wants to make portable technology with mixed-reality capabilities better in general, and this new product is a part of that. But it’s not likely that the glasses will become fully augmented reality (AR) products like Apple’s Vision Pro headset.

Meta and EssilorLuxottica, a big name in eyewear, released the second version of Ray-Ban smart glasses in November 2023. These glasses already have a number of AI-power features. These include helping people find their stopped cars, letting them send voice texts through WhatsApp and Messenger, and letting them use some apps without using their hands. Instead of full AR experiences, the next version of the glasses will have a small screen that will show messages and replies from Meta’s virtual helper.

Meta is still working on improving its mixed-reality glasses, but the next screens won’t be able to give you the same full augmented reality experiences as more advanced headsets. As an alternative, they will add another level of ease to everyday tasks. The Financial Times was told by people familiar with the project that Meta’s prototype AR glasses, named Orion, will be released sooner than planned. Even though the schedule has been sped up, Orion won’t be available to the public for several more years.

The Orion glasses were first shown off in September. They are meant to offer a light mixed-reality experience by using some features from Meta’s much bigger and more powerful Quest 3 virtual reality gear. Mark Zuckerberg said that the Orion glasses are the most powerful pair of glasses ever made. But for now, the focus will stay on messages and interacting with the virtual helper instead of full mixed-reality features.

Big tech companies are getting more competitive in the mixed-reality market at the same time that this news comes out. In September, Cristiano Amon, CEO of Qualcomm, said that the company was working with Samsung and Google to make mixed-reality glasses that could connect to smartphones. Apple is also said to be working on a cheaper version of its $2,500 Vision Pro headset at the same time. This cheaper option is set to come out after 2027 and is aimed at a wider range of customers.
