Virtual Taekwondo Makes Asian Games Medal Debut
Virtual taekwondo will make its first appearance as an official medal event at the Asian Games when the Aichi-Nagoya Games open on 19 September. Sixteen athletes from 15 countries will compete for one gold medal in the mixed-gender event. The Korea Times reported the participation details, while industry sources cited by The Korea Herald described it as the first virtual reality-based martial art to be added to the Games programme.
The competition differs from the physical sparring used in conventional taekwondo. Athletes wear virtual reality headsets and motion-tracking sensors, while their kicks and footwork control digital avatars on a screen. Instead of striking another person, competitors reduce an opponent’s power gauge through movements that the system records. Spectators can therefore see athletes performing kicks without making physical contact. At the same time, a health bar displayed on a monitor indicates the progress of the virtual contest, according to Yonhap News Agency.
The event’s importance lies in how quickly the format has moved from demonstration status to an official medal competition. Virtual taekwondo first appeared as a demonstration event at the International Olympic Committee’s Olympic Esports Series three years before its inclusion at the Asian Games, The Korea Times reported. The rules and scoring system determine how athletes compete for the single medal at Aichi-Nagoya.
World Taekwondo introduced the format in June 2023 at Singapore’s Olympic Esports Week. Singapore hosted the inaugural virtual taekwondo world championships the following year, where its athletes won nine medals, including four golds, according to Yonhap News Agency.
At Aichi-Nagoya, the 16 competitors will be aged between 17 and 35. The event will not separate athletes by sex, with men and women competing in the same bracket for a single gold medal. World Taekwondo and Refract Technologies jointly developed the format, combining virtual reality technology with techniques from traditional taekwondo. AP News reported that the mixture of digital technology and established martial arts techniques has attracted young, technology-oriented players.
South Korea’s Ahn Hyang-sik is among the athletes seeking a place in the new event. The 22-year-old will also compete in the men’s 58-kilogram division of conventional taekwondo, where he will face human opponents. In the virtual competition, athletes are not separated by weight. His participation allows him to compete for two gold medals during the same Games, one in the traditional event and another in virtual taekwondo.
Matches are held on a 4-by-4-metre mat. Each round lasts 60 seconds, and the match is decided by a best-of-three format, according to The Korea Times and The Korea Herald. A conventional taekwondo round lasts two minutes, making the virtual round about half as long. Yonhap News Agency reported that the shorter rounds require athletes to maximise their effort within the limited time.
A fighter can win a round by knockout. If the 60 seconds expire without a knockout, the athlete with more remaining health wins. Kicks are classified as strong, medium or weak according to their speed. Head strikes cause twice as much damage as body strikes.
The greater effect of head kicks also exacts a physical toll on athletes. Ahn told Yonhap News Agency that head strikes reduce more of the opponent’s power gauge than body strikes, while also requiring more energy and potentially placing strain on the hamstrings. The scoring system therefore links the value of an attack to the physical effort required to deliver it.
Virtual taekwondo also uses a stun gauge alongside the health bar. The mechanic resembles systems used in video game fighting, according to The Korea Times. Punches do not reduce an opponent’s health, but they fill the stun gauge. Once the gauge reaches its limit, the affected athlete becomes unable to block or evade attacks for three seconds. Blocking a kick with an arm reduces the defender’s own stun gauge.
The competition does not use the weight and gender categories found in conventional taekwondo. Instead, all athletes enter the same virtual bracket. This changes how physical characteristics can affect a contest. Ahn told Yonhap News Agency that heavier athletes may have slower kicks, while lighter practitioners can produce two or three kicks in succession. He said flexibility and precision are more important in the virtual format than physical mass.
Those differences are also reflected in training. Digital Trends reported that programmes developed around virtual taekwondo treat it as a full-body discipline involving endurance, flexibility and rapid execution. Performance depends on decisions over when to move and strike, as well as how quickly an athlete’s body can carry out those movements.
The lack of physical contact has also been linked to the sport’s accessibility. Digital Trends reported that the format retains the physical demands of traditional sparring while reducing the injury risks associated with direct contact. This could allow more people to try martial arts without beginning with a full-contact contest.
The development of virtual taekwondo is also connected to demographic pressures facing traditional training centres. The Korea Herald reported that declining birth rates threaten the survival of some traditional taekwondo gyms, known as dojangs, as augmented and virtual reality headsets become more common. The publication also reported a shift in the sport’s business model, with greater attention moving from uniforms and headgear towards sensors, software and digital platforms. That change could contribute to taekwondo being practised through more digital forms as well as on a physical mat.
The format nevertheless has practical limitations. Some athletes have experienced dizziness after first using the virtual reality headset, according to Digital Trends. They have also had to relearn how to judge distance in an environment they cannot physically feel. The equipment remains expensive enough to slow adoption by clubs, creating a barrier for organisations seeking to introduce the system.
The final challenge is therefore not limited to learning the rules or adapting traditional taekwondo techniques to a digital environment.
