New Mexico State University Pilots VR Teacher Training
New Mexico State University (NMSU) is piloting a virtual reality teacher training programme in New Mexico in partnership with Meta’s Los Lunas data centre. The VR for Educators series is being tested in communities linked to Meta’s data centre operations before NMSU offers it nationwide through its microcredentialing programme, according to a news release. The opportunity is scheduled to begin in autumn and is intended for teachers working with children from kindergarten through secondary education.
The self-paced online programme covers how virtual reality works, how to integrate it into lessons, and how instructional design can support its use across grade levels and subjects. The training covers both the technology and its classroom applications. Its scope includes lesson integration and the design of teaching activities suited to different subjects and age groups.
The report also featured a classroom example involving Lord Rivas Alcomendras, a former teacher at Belen Consolidated Schools. Alcomendras took virtual reality courses offered by NMSU Global Campus and used the technology to teach about the solar system. The lesson let students explore space through realistic three-dimensional environments instead of depending solely on reading.
Meta has invested billions of dollars in data centre construction in New Mexico and millions in schools in the area, according to a fact sheet on the Los Lunas data centre. The investment information provides supplementary context for the partnership between the technology company and the university.
The pilot is intended to precede wider availability through NMSU’s microcredentialing programme. The planned nationwide rollout would extend the programme beyond the communities involved in the initial phase. The training still focuses on helping teachers understand virtual reality, consider its use in lessons, and apply instructional design across school subjects and grade levels.
