T-Mobile 5G Transforms PGA Championship

T-Mobile 5G Transforms PGA Championship
AI-Generated Mixed-Reality Graphics for Back Nine Camera Feeds

T-Mobile’s 5G Advanced Network is set to revolutionise the spectator and broadcast experience at this week’s PGA Championship, held at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina. The PGA of America is implementing several cutting-edge technologies powered by T-Mobile’s 5G Advanced Network Solutions (ANS), including network slicing and a portable private 5G service known as 5G on Demand. These tools will deliver new ways for fans, broadcasters, and event staff to engage with the tournament, both on-site and remotely.

One of the standout innovations making its debut at the Championship is “T5G on 14,” an immersive mixed-reality broadcast feature developed in partnership with CBS Sports and ESPN. This new technology combines AI-generated data and augmented reality into a virtual map that presents real-time analytics for each shot taken from the 14th tee. The system displays detailed information such as hole performance, club speed, and swing analysis.

Thanks to the ultra-low latency of 5G on Demand, the footage is broadcast in full high dynamic range (HDR), offering fans an elevated viewing experience. Additionally, artificial intelligence will be used to evaluate every shot in real time, creating automatically generated highlight clips known as “Roar Moments.” These clips will be delivered directly to users of the PGA Championship mobile app, spotlighting the most pivotal or challenging shots as they happen.

For the first time at a major golf tournament, a 5G private network will be used to link wireless cameras positioned throughout the back nine of the course, including the notoriously tough “Green Mile.” T-Mobile’s 5G on Demand enables CBS Sports and ESPN to transmit crisp HDR footage directly from these remote areas without relying on traditional wired infrastructure.

This development introduces a new level of flexibility and mobility for sports broadcasters. The virtual map in the T5G on 14 experience is updated almost instantly using real-time data, offering unique visual insights for fans. The AI-driven production tools combined with live augmented-reality overlays provide a deeper understanding of player performance and strategy.

Beyond the broadcast itself, T-Mobile’s 5G Advanced Network is enabling a range of interactive and personalised fan experiences. The PGA of America’s digital channels will benefit from remote video production capabilities, allowing for live walk-and-talk interviews with players, real-time content from the T5G Range at Quail Hollow, and live coaching tips from PGA professionals based at PGA Frisco.

This exclusive content will be branded as “Champ Connections powered by T-Mobile” and made available via the PGA Championship app, the organisation’s YouTube channel, and across its social media platforms. Fans will be able to enjoy behind-the-scenes footage and expert analysis at any time during the tournament.

The PGA Championship app has also been upgraded to act as a smart companion for fans attending the event in person. It provides real-time location-based updates on nearby players, food and beverage options, and wayfinding assistance across the expansive 250-acre course. Notably, the app will feature Roar Moment notifications, ensuring fans never miss a game-changing shot, whether watching from the grandstands or at home.

T-Mobile’s high-speed, low-latency connectivity enhances multiple aspects of the on-site experience. Entry lines and concession queues are expedited, while photojournalists benefit from fast upload speeds, enabling near-instant sharing of high-resolution images.

The vast layout and heavy footfall typical of golf events often present logistical challenges. However, T-Mobile’s 5G simplifies these through dedicated infrastructure. Network slicing is employed to link all point-of-sale terminals and ticket scanners on-site, ensuring seamless payment processing and admission — all without hardwired connections.

Additionally, event staff use a 5 G-supported push-to-talk communication system for real-time coordination across the course, helping to manage operations or emergencies efficiently.

Another technological highlight includes an AI-powered robotic ball collector, deployed at the T5G Range. Equipped with cameras and sensors, the autonomous machine clears golf balls as players practise, operating independently across the range using T-Mobile’s advanced connectivity.

For T-Mobile customers, the “Club Magenta” lounge near the 10th green offers a dedicated space to relax and recharge — both devices and themselves. The area features exclusive giveaways, shaded seating, augmented reality putting games, and complimentary refreshments. Attendees can also look forward to surprise appearances by professional golfers such as Max Homa and Wyndham Clark, Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young, and country music artist Jordan Davis. The Barstool Sports Fore Play crew will also be present, contributing to the entertainment throughout the event.

By integrating next-generation 5G solutions into nearly every facet of the PGA Championship, T-Mobile and the PGA of America are showcasing how advanced connectivity can enhance both the spectacle and the smooth execution of a premier sporting event. From AI-powered insights to immersive virtual broadcasts and streamlined venue operations, the tournament is shaping up to be a milestone moment for 5G innovation in live sports.
