Valve Steam Frame price fears grow after Steam Machine

Steam Machine Pricing Raises Steam Frame Cost Concerns

Valve’s unveiling of the Steam Machine has prompted fresh debate over the likely price of its forthcoming Steam Frame virtual reality headset. Although the company has yet to announce the headset’s retail price, the launch of a SteamOS-powered gaming PC above $1,000 has altered expectations among many followers of Valve’s hardware plans.

The shift in sentiment gained attention after VR leaker and content creator, SadlyItsBradley, responded to a question about Steam Frame pricing following the Steam Machine announcement. His brief reaction quickly became a key topic of discussion because it represented a broader concern that the headset could also enter the market at a premium price.

Valve has introduced the Steam Machine as a compact gaming PC designed for living room use. The model equipped with 512GB of storage is priced at $1,049, while the 2TB version costs $1,349. Buyers choosing to add the new Steam Controller face a higher overall purchase price.

Steam Machine and Steam Frame are intended for different purposes, but both form part of Valve’s latest hardware strategy. The Steam Machine is designed as a compact PC for television gaming, while the Steam Frame is being developed as a standalone wireless virtual reality headset capable of running and streaming Steam games. The pricing of one product has therefore influenced expectations surrounding the other, even though they occupy different segments.

The discussion has also been determined by the current cost of hardware components. Rising component prices affect both products, driving speculation about how much Valve may charge for its upcoming headset.

Valve has previously explained that it is not adopting the traditional console model in which hardware is sold at a loss and software sales recover the investment through a closed platform. Instead, the company has positioned Steam Machine as part of the open PC ecosystem rather than a locked gaming system. That approach makes a heavily subsidised launch price for Steam Frame appear less likely.

The published specifications also suggest that the Steam Frame is intended as a high-end device. According to the available information, it features a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, 16GB of LPDDR5X memory, dual 2160 × 2160 LCD displays with high-refresh-rate support, inside-out tracking, wireless PC streaming, and dedicated controllers. Valve is also presenting the headset as a way for users to access their Steam library in virtual reality rather than simply as another standalone VR headset.

Opinion remains divided on where the headset’s final retail price could fall. Some followers of the platform continue to believe Valve could introduce Steam Frame at a price below the first Valve Index full kit’s launch price of $999. Others now regard a price above $1,000 as a realistic possibility following the Steam Machine announcement.

The differing views are also reflected in the discussion of the hardware itself. Some believe Steam Frame’s use of mobile-oriented components and LPDDR5X memory may limit the impact of rising component costs compared with a more conventional PC-based device. Others argue that virtual reality hardware relies on expensive custom optics, displays, controllers, tracking cameras, batteries, manufacturing tooling and years of research and development, all of which add substantially to production costs.

Valve’s Steam Deck established a reputation for delivering competitively priced hardware. By contrast, the Steam Machine has attracted attention for its considerably higher entry price, even though Valve has indicated that current component costs are reflected in its pricing.

Valve has not confirmed how much Steam Frame will cost. However, the Steam Machine announcement has noticeably reshaped expectations, with much of the discussion now centred on whether the company’s next hardware release will also command a premium price.
