Google Expands Gemini AI Smart Glasses Strategy
Google has expanded its artificial intelligence and wearable technology strategy with the introduction of its latest Gemini AI model and new Android XR-powered smart glasses. The developments were highlighted during the company’s developer conference in May 2026 and later discussed in a Counterpoint Research research report published on 24 May 2026.
The company presented AI smart glasses developed in partnership with Samsung. The devices run Android XR and are designed to blend artificial intelligence with wearable technology. Counterpoint Research stated that the move forms part of Google’s wider push into agentic AI and connected devices.
According to the report, Meta currently holds around 80 per cent of the AI smart glasses market. Counterpoint Research linked Meta’s position to its focus on combining smart glasses with its social and community platforms. The research firm said that the market is expected to become more competitive between 2026 and 2027 as Google, Meta and Apple continue expanding their wearable technology strategies.
Google’s strategy centres on combining its existing internet services ecosystem with artificial intelligence and wearable hardware. The company’s services include search, mapping, video and mobile computing platforms. Analysts stated that these services could support a more integrated experience between AI smart glasses and smartphones. The Android XR operating system is also compatible with both Android and iOS devices, extending support beyond Google’s own mobile platform.
During Google I/O 2026, the company introduced further details about Android XR and its smart eyewear plans. Google stated that two categories of intelligent eyewear are being developed. One category focuses on audio-based smart glasses that provide spoken assistance via Gemini AI, while the other focuses on display-enabled smart glasses.
Google stated that the smart glasses are designed to support hands-free functions, including navigation, messaging, photography and language translation. The company also confirmed partnerships with eyewear brands Gentle Monster and Warby Parker as part of the launch strategy for Android XR devices.
Reports from Google I/O 2026 indicated that Gemini AI is being positioned as a central part of Google’s wider ecosystem strategy. The company presented updates to its Gemini models alongside announcements about wearable devices, Android services, and AI-driven applications.
Industry coverage from the conference also highlighted Google’s collaboration with Samsung and Qualcomm on Android XR. The operating system is intended to support a wider range of extended reality devices, including headsets and smart glasses.
Additional demonstrations during the event included Android XR devices developed by Xreal. Reports stated that these products are intended to support immersive events and artificial intelligence features through wearable hardware.
Alphabet Inc, Google’s parent company, operates in the communication services sector and is primarily involved in the interactive media industry. The company has a market capitalisation of approximately $4.62 trillion. Around 90 per cent of Alphabet’s revenue comes from Google services, with advertising remaining the largest share of the business.
The company also earns revenue through subscription services, platforms, devices and cloud computing operations. Cloud services account for roughly 10 per cent of Alphabet’s revenue base. Analysts have identified the company’s broad technology portfolio as an advantage amid expanding competition in the artificial intelligence and wearable technology sectors.
According to GuruFocus data, Alphabet’s Class A shares currently have a GF Value estimate of $228.88. With the stock trading at $382.97, the valuation model indicated that the shares were 67.3 per cent above the estimated fair value level.
