Joybird Introduces AR Tool for Mobile Shopping
Joybird Enhances Mobile Shopping Experience with AR Tool

A significant portion of Joybird’s online traffic originates from mobile devices, with at least 70% of visitors accessing the platform through smartphones. Acknowledging this trend, the furniture retailer has introduced a new augmented reality (AR) feature designed to enhance mobile shopping experiences.

Joybird has expanded its digital retail offerings with the launch of the 3D Space Planner Mobile Experience, an AR-powered tool aimed at improving customer engagement. This latest update, announced on January 28, was developed in partnership with 3D Cloud, a firm specialising in immersive digital solutions. The feature allows customers and designers to visualise, create, and share room layouts directly from their mobile devices.

The brand, which specialises in upholstered furniture, has been owned by La-Z-Boy since 2018. La-Z-Boy, ranked 250th in Digital Commerce 360’s Top 1000 Database, continues to grow its digital presence, with projections estimating its online sales will reach $343.82 million by 2025.

The newly introduced mobile functionality builds upon Joybird’s existing desktop-based design tool, providing a more accessible and intuitive experience. The company describes the 3D Space Planner Mobile Experience as a streamlined yet immersive feature that leverages an advanced texture format, reducing file sizes while maintaining high image quality and improving load times.

For customers who had previously faced challenges due to the lack of mobile functionality, the update provides a practical solution that bridges the gap between digital convenience and in-store interactions. The AR feature enables real-time collaboration, allowing customers and interior designers to share their room designs with showroom associates, creating a more integrated shopping journey.

In addition to the 3D Space Planner, Joybird has also incorporated Web-based Augmented Reality (WebAR) capabilities into its platform. This enhancement enables users to overlay 3D models of furniture into real-world settings, helping them assess dimensions, styles, and overall fit before making a purchase. Shoppers can also explore Joybird’s extensive catalogue of customisable furniture, including various colours, materials, and designs, directly through their smartphones.

This mobile update represents a significant step toward providing a fully interactive design experience for customers, fostering a more dynamic and engaging approach to furniture shopping.

Beyond the AR-powered planner, Joybird offers a suite of free design tools to further support customer decision-making. These include:

  • Room Scanner – A feature integrated into the 3D Space Planner, allowing users to scan a room, take measurements, and generate a customised floor plan.
  • Modular Sofa Builder – A tool enabling shoppers to mix and match various components to personalise sofas, loveseats, and other seating arrangements.

Joybird’s investment in immersive digital tools aligns with an industry-wide shift toward AI and AR-driven shopping experiences. As more consumers turn to online platforms for furniture purchases, retailers are integrating these technologies to enhance product visualisation and facilitate decision-making.

Several leading furniture and home improvement brands have already adopted similar innovations. Wayfair recently introduced Decorify, an AI-powered home decorating tool that integrates with the Apple Vision Pro headset, enabling users to redesign their spaces using Wayfair’s product catalogue. Lowe’s has launched Style Studio, a VR-powered kitchen remodelling tool that offers customers the ability to adjust layouts, materials, and fixtures through an interactive virtual experience. Ikea, ranked seventh in Digital Commerce 360’s Europe Database, has also developed Kreativ, a digital tool that allows customers to place furniture and decor in virtual versions of their homes.

Wayfair currently holds the 10th position in Digital Commerce 360’s Top 1000 Database, while Lowe’s ranks 11th. These investments in AR and AI tools demonstrate the increasing role of digital innovation in shaping the future of the home furnishing industry.

Joybird’s latest AR enhancement reinforces its commitment to bridging the gap between digital convenience and immersive in-store experiences, ensuring that customers have the tools they need to make confident purchasing decisions.
