Navy Unveils VR at Chippewa Valley Air Show
Navy Brings VR Strike Group Challenge to Chippewa Show

Spectators attending the Chippewa Valley Air Show this year can look forward to more than the spectacular flight displays of the Blue Angels, who were seen conducting practice runs on Friday afternoon. Alongside the thrilling aerial performances, the United States Navy has introduced a new interactive “strike group” mixed-reality experience to offer a closer look at naval operations.

On Friday, the Navy unveiled its advanced mixed-reality programme, which provides an immersive, hands-on perspective into naval life, technology, and the spirit of collaboration essential within the service. Visitors to the event are invited to take part in this innovative showcase, exploring elements of aircraft carrier operations, global humanitarian efforts, and naval aviation through a high-tech virtual environment.

The “strike group” experience is structured around three primary interactive challenges, according to information provided by the Navy’s partners. In one activity, participants are grouped into teams of five and equipped with Meta Quest 3 headsets. In a fully immersive simulation, they find themselves on the USS Gerald R. Ford’s flight deck, where they must coordinate their actions to launch an F-35C Lightning II. Within this scenario, players assume a range of roles, including refuelling, helicopter operations, and piloting the aircraft itself, delivering an authentic sense of the coordinated efforts necessary for naval missions.

Another segment of the experience focuses on the Navy’s worldwide humanitarian missions. Participants can use an interactive world map featuring a variety of ships and vehicles to navigate through the Navy’s global operations. This element is designed to highlight not only the scale of humanitarian efforts but also the career pathways available for individuals interested in contributing to these missions. Each selected ship or vehicle on the map triggers educational content detailing its purpose and the humanitarian tasks it supports.

The third major feature is a full-motion flight simulator, providing participants with a chance to step into the cockpit of an F-35C Lightning II. Here, visitors undertake a simulated training mission, launching from an aircraft carrier alongside a wingman. After a brief introductory tutorial, they learn to control the aircraft before engaging in a mission that involves dropping training munitions on a designated target. Upon completion, they must safely land back on the carrier, offering a realistic taste of naval aviation training.

This mixed-reality initiative is designed to deliver a broader understanding of the United States Navy’s multifaceted mission and the variety of skills required to serve. Officials have noted that the showcase is just a glimpse into more than 200 different career fields within the Navy, many of which encompass STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) opportunities. These careers are open to individuals eager to be part of operations that range from combat readiness to global humanitarian support.

By integrating cutting-edge virtual and mixed-reality technologies, the Navy aims to inspire young people to explore military and technological careers while gaining an appreciation for the complexity and teamwork embedded in naval service. The Chippewa Valley Air Show, already a major attraction due to its renowned flight displays, now offers visitors a unique opportunity to interact with the Navy’s evolving mission in a deeply engaging and educational way.

With the Blue Angels drawing crowds for their daring aerial displays and the Navy’s immersive demonstration taking centre stage on the ground, the air show promises a comprehensive experience celebrating both aviation excellence and the commitment of the United States Navy to innovation, education, and global service.
