VirtuaLens Adds Mix and Match for Cataract Patient Education
VirtuaLens has launched a new Mix and Match feature for its immersive virtual reality patient education platform. The update expands surgeons’ ability to demonstrate personalised intraocular lens (IOL) strategies to patients considering cataract surgery.
The VirtuaLens platform and headset simulate visual differences among IOL options before surgery. The system gives patients an immersive way to experience potential postoperative vision rather than relying solely on traditional educational materials.
The new Mix and Match software feature allows surgeons to assign different types of IOLs to each eye. This enables them to demonstrate treatment approaches intended to optimise vision across multiple distances. For example, a surgeon can simulate a multifocal IOL in one eye and an extended depth of focus (EDOF) IOL in the other.
The feature also supports other combinations involving different IOL technologies. This allows surgeons to demonstrate approaches that use different premium IOL technologies in each eye as part of discussions about cataract treatment options.
The software update also includes a Monovision Dominance Invert function. This allows surgeons to switch eye dominance during a consultation. The function lets patients compare different monovision configurations and better understand how each approach could affect their everyday vision.
The additions address a patient education challenge that has become increasingly relevant as cataract treatment strategies become more individualised. When surgeons combine different premium IOL technologies between the two eyes, brochures or two-dimensional videos can make it difficult to explain the potential benefits and trade-offs, according to VirtuaLens.
VirtuaLens said its immersive simulations are designed to help patients visualise these concepts. The simulations also support individualised discussions between surgeons and patients about their treatment options.
The Mix and Match capability lets surgeons demonstrate different IOL configurations during those discussions. Surgeons can assign different IOL types to the two eyes, including combinations such as a multifocal IOL in one eye and an EDOF IOL in the other.
The Monovision Dominance Invert function provides another way to demonstrate different configurations. By switching eye dominance during a consultation, surgeons can allow patients to compare monovision approaches and consider how each configuration could affect their everyday vision.
Alongside the software update, VirtuaLens has introduced a Mix and Match Vision Tutorial. The guided tutorial is intended to help surgeons, technicians and other practice staff learn to use the new functionality.
The tutorial provides an overview of the Mix and Match feature and is intended to support practices as they incorporate the technology into patient consultations.
