Rokid and Alipay Unveil AR Glasses Payment in Chinese Retail Stores
Rokid, a leading Chinese firm in augmented reality technology, has expanded the capabilities of its AR glasses by integrating Alipay’s payment platform, allowing consumers in China to make in-store purchases directly through the smart eyewear. This collaboration introduces a method for users to complete transactions using voice and gesture controls with their Rokid Glasses, removing the need to physically manage a mobile phone while shopping.
The newly introduced payment solution is powered by Alipay’s advanced digital payment system and a risk control framework specifically adapted for augmented reality environments. Rokid reported that the demand for its smart glasses has already surpassed 250,000 units, with shipments commencing in June. These glasses, developed in partnership with the eyewear manufacturer BOLON, were launched in November of the previous year and combine sophisticated augmented reality features with artificial intelligence.
To use the new system, customers must first link their Alipay account through the Rokid application and activate voice verification. During a purchase, they initiate the process by issuing a specific voice command, such as requesting a payment of a set amount. The smart glasses are then used to scan the merchant’s Alipay QR code, after which payment information is displayed in the user’s field of vision. Users confirm the transaction using their voice, enabling a completely hands-free payment process.
The company asserts that this system offers a quicker and more seamless experience compared to the conventional smartphone-based QR code payments, which can often take between 20 to 30 seconds to complete. The hands-free operation is designed to enhance convenience, particularly in busy retail environments.
Rokid emphasised that equipping its smart glasses with payment functionality brings a more fluid and intuitive experience for consumers, while signalling a significant advance in the application of artificial intelligence and AR within the retail sector. The technology is seen as a step towards transforming the future of in-store transactions, with the potential to reshape the landscape of immersive commerce in China.
Alipay, operated by Ant Group, has played a key role in the evolution of mobile payments in the country. In 2024, Alipay introduced the ‘Alipay Tap!’ feature, enabling payments by simply tapping an unlocked phone to a payment terminal. By April 2025, the service had been adopted by more than 100 million users, reflecting strong consumer interest in contactless and frictionless payment methods.
The recent integration with AR glasses is seen as an example of the expanding influence of wearable technology within retail settings. Industry observers note that the ability to pay by voice or gesture, and to interact with payment interfaces displayed on wearable devices, illustrates a broader trend toward immersive and personalised shopping experiences. Such technology allows retailers to offer novel engagement strategies, including interactive services based on customer location, as well as virtual try-on and product recommendations tailored to individual preferences.
Rokid’s approach suggests that, as AR wearables continue to develop, the process of discovering products and making purchases will become increasingly streamlined. In the future, shoppers may complete transactions simply by looking at or gesturing toward items, blurring the boundaries between physical and digital commerce. The company sees this as the next evolution in smart retail, with AR devices supporting new opportunities for businesses to connect with their customers through innovative, interactive experiences.
