BT and Belfast City Council Open City Hall’s AR Encounter

BT and Belfast City Council Open City Hall's AR Encounter
Belfast City Council and BT Work Together to Launch AR Experience

A state-of-the-art augmented reality (AR) experience that showcases the promise and possibilities of 5G networks has been launched after BT made a large investment.

The initiative, which is now undergoing testing as part of the tourist display at Belfast’s City Hall, was created via a groundbreaking research and development arrangement between Belfast City Council and BT.

The “City Speech” and “City Streets” parts showcase the augmented reality expertise, which provides an immersive exploration of Belfast’s historical, current, and future contexts. A captivating story highlighting the city’s development and cultural diversity is presented to visitors.

The experience combines AR with projection, gesture-controlled gameplay, and cutting-edge wireless networking with cutting-edge technologies. A comprehensive 3D map of Belfast, dynamic street activities, and a customised feature that lets guests create personalised Instagrammable postcard art with famous Belfast sites are some of the features.

The massive, finely detailed 3D model of the town is powered by BT’s Research & Network Strategy group’s experimental project of integrating 5G with cloud rendering technologies in Room 8 of the show. Working together with partnerships like AWS, UM Labs, and JAM Creative Studios, this imaginative idea was made a reality.

In addition to Belfast City Council’s 5G-enabled test structures, BT has contributed £1 million to the project. In addition to improving Belfast’s tourist industry, this partnership is expected to establish a standard for innovation in other Northern Ireland businesses.

The test of this comprehensive augmented reality encounter is a concrete example of the promise of wireless connection, according to Janet Burns, Director of Business Development at BT. Burns said that the 5G-enabled immersive technology is a prime example of BT’s “Connecting for Good” mission, which emphasises the advantages of connection for both enterprises and people. This initiative demonstrates BT’s continued commitment to the creativity and technical growth of Northern Ireland.

Burns went on to say that BT wants to show off the revolutionary potential of 5G innovation and provide a template for how Belfast’s creatives may use this cutting-edge wireless technology.

Visitors may participate in the experiment for free until the end of March 2025. Visitors may purchase tickets beforehand or show up on the exact day of the event based on availability.
