US Broadcasters Deploy New Tech for Election Coverage
Networks Introduce New Technology for Election Broadcasts

Television networks across the United States are applying advanced technology to their coverage of the upcoming midterm elections. While standard reporting and data analysis remain the primary focus, media organisations are employing virtual reality, augmented reality, touchscreen interfaces, and vertically oriented video formats. These technical additions are designed to present complex voting trends and regional results in a highly visual format for domestic and international audiences.

ABC News will commence its seven-hour live election broadcast at 7 p.m. Eastern Time. The network is distributing its results coverage across its primary channel and streaming platforms, including ABC News Live, Hulu, and Disney Plus. World News Tonight anchor David Muir is scheduled to lead the primary coverage. A dedicated mobile application feature named Verts, launched in early October, will provide vertically oriented video content customised for mobile phone users. The network’s digital division is also running online blogs and interactive maps to track the balance of power in the United States Congress. Continuous radio updates will supplement the television broadcast, while the NewsOne syndicated news service will supply regional television stations with reporting throughout the day.

CBS News is launching its central election programming, titled America Decides Election 2026, at 7 p.m. Eastern Time. The programming will air across its primary broadcast network, the CBS News 24/7 channel, and associated digital platforms. CBS Evening News anchor Tony Dokoupil and CBS Mornings co-host Norah O’Donnell will host the primary coverage. Before the main broadcast, the network is introducing a digital-only programme called The Nerd Show, beginning at 5 p.m. Eastern Time. This programme will feature Anthony Salvanto, the network executive director of elections and surveys, alongside congressional correspondent Caitlin Huey-Burns. All fifteen television stations owned by the network are utilising proprietary augmented and virtual reality technology to construct new election centres. This infrastructure, first deployed at the KPIX station in San Francisco, lets journalists create three-dimensional graphics, immersive maps, and dynamic visualisations to track regional ballot measures and voting trends.

CNN is beginning its primary broadcast, Election Night in America, at 4 p.m. Eastern Time, hosted by Jake Tapper and Anderson Cooper from Washington. This follows preliminary programming titled Election Day in America, which begins at midnight. The network is extending this coverage to international audiences through CNN International and providing dedicated Spanish-language programming called Voto Latino during peak viewing hours. Digital subscribers will receive access to custom vertical video streams, a specialised newsletter titled 20/26 Vision, and exclusive historical data. The network is also debuting a proprietary data translation tool called Sightline, which will operate alongside its traditional interactive Magic Wall on digital and mobile platforms.

Fox News Media is scheduling its primary election programming, Fox News Democracy 26, to begin at 6 p.m. Eastern Time. Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum will co-anchor the broadcast, which will air simultaneously on the Fox Business Network until 6 a.m. on 4 November. The network is expanding its use of data-driven graphics to illustrate county-level voting shifts and monitor congressional control. The network has implemented an updated automated production system to enable rapid graphic deployment during breaking news events. The network’s digital division is operating a live blog and a Fox News Voter Analysis tool, while its mobile application is introducing a Midterms 2026 tab that utilises artificial intelligence to process election data. Furthermore, a dedicated digital broadcast titled Ruthless Live Midterm Election Show will stream live from Washington from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Fox Digital and Fox Nation.

NBCUniversal has scheduled thirteen hours of continuous election programming through its Decision 26 broadcast, running from 5 p.m. Eastern Time until 6 a.m. on 4 November. Savannah Guthrie, Tom Llamas, Kristen Welker, and Hallie Jackson will lead the primetime coverage from the network election headquarters in New York City. The network has upgraded its main Big Board to feature a dual-screen presentation displaying state maps, exit polls, and proportional congressional vote breakdowns. A dedicated Steve Kornacki Cam will provide continuous behind-the-scenes access to the data analysis process. Peacock is introducing a multiview display beginning at 5:30 p.m. Eastern Time, allowing subscribers to monitor the NBC News NOW live feed, the Kornacki Cam, and real-time numerical results simultaneously on a single screen. The network is also sharing reporting resources and data from its Decision Desk with Noticias Telemundo to provide comprehensive Spanish-language coverage.

Nexstar Media Group is broadcasting its primary coverage on NewsNation from 7 p.m. Eastern Time until midnight. The Decision Desk 2026 Election Night in America broadcast will be co-anchored by Chris Cuomo, Elizabeth Vargas, Leland Vittert, Katie Pavlich, and Chris Stirewalt. The network has partnered with Decision Desk HQ to provide independent race determinations. A dedicated team of data analysts, including data scientist Scott Tranter, is operating from an election war room located at the McCourt School of Public Policy at Georgetown University. Preliminary coverage will begin at 6 a.m. Eastern Time with Morning in America, anchored by Markie Martin in Chicago and Blake Burman in Washington. Digital platforms will supply live race results, a live blog, and congressional power tracking throughout the day.

Sinclair is transmitting a four-hour National News Desk Election Night Special across its affiliated The CW and MyNetworkTV stations from 8 p.m. Eastern Time until midnight. The broadcast, which will also air on YouTube, will be anchored by Dee Dee Gatton, with Ryan Smith providing steady updates from the Live Desk. The broadcast is utilising a newly constructed video wall and interactive touchscreen system to examine real-time voting patterns. The special will exclude traditional political panel discussions, focusing exclusively on race results and relying entirely on immediate local reporting from regional journalists nationwide.

DirecTV is offering subscribers with compatible Gemini or Genie devices a dedicated Election HQ multi-channel viewing option. This feature consolidates high-definition feeds from CNN, Newsmax TV, MS NOW, and Fox News Channel onto a single television screen. The consolidated viewing channel will be available from 2 November to 4 November on channels 71 and 200, accessible via the home screen or a red button feature on participating networks. Access is strictly restricted to supported television hardware and cannot be viewed through web browsers, tablets, smartphones, or other streaming applications.
