Sisu VR Employing VR to Strengthen Workplace Education
Since its conception, virtual reality (VR) technology has advanced significantly. In contrast to the majority of people, Sisu VR is approaching virtual reality differently. Sisu VR was founded by CEO Jocelyn Tan with the goal of offering virtual training experiences to businesses, preparing staff for scenarios they hope to never encounter.
Tan’s own experiences leading engineering teams at many Silicon Valley tech companies served as her inspiration for founding Sisu VR. She felt discriminated against, harassed, and bullied, so she took action. Tan said that she has two choices: either she resolves the problem or she leaves STEM entirely.
VR harassment training was Sisu VR’s first endeavour. Suggested by professionals who have encountered wrongdoing, scenarios representing a range of work environments were created. Taking on several roles, including victim, witness, manager, and offender, trainees manoeuvre through situations including microaggressions, office politics, and the appropriate ways to provide criticism and extend an apology. Due to VR’s immersive nature, students may adopt many personas, which may increase empathy.
Sisu VR teamed with startup MindGlow in a calculated approach that would ultimately result in the company’s acquisition in 2022. They collaborated to create VR active shooter training. In addition to practicing concealment, self-defence, and evacuation procedures, trainees learn how to detect gunfire and its source. Even if the shooter in the training is a cardboard cutout rather than a real person, practicing these skills in virtual reality (VR) is still a more effective way to prepare people than just viewing a film. Because the training is timed, participants are encouraged to increase their reaction speed.
Tan agrees that it is a difficult subject to talk about, even if Sisu VR’s strategy may sound dystopian to some. However, safeguarding, empowering, and maybe saving lives remain the main objectives. Sisu VR has created a no-code VR engine that enables developers to build their own VR apps in addition to their training courses.
