Metallica Introduces Immersive VR Concert Film and Live EP with Apple Collaboration
Metallica has shared information about a new virtual reality (VR) performance film that will give fans a more realistic experience. This project is part of the band’s new partnership with Apple, and it is made to work with the Apple Vision Pro headset. This new VR live film, just called Metallica, will be available to watch starting Friday, March 14.
This 3D movie shows scenes from the band’s “M72” tour, which was to promote the release of their new record, 72 Seasons. The tour went to many places in other countries, so fans from all over the world could see the band’s powerful live shows.
There is a VR performance film from Metallica’s last show in Mexico City last year. The video shows the band performing some of their most famous songs in their entirety, such as “Enter Sandman,” “Whiplash,” and “One.” We recorded these acts using Apple’s immersive video technology, which gives you 180-degree images with very high quality for a better watching experience.
Along with immersive images, the movie uses spatial music to make you feel even more present. The experience puts people right next to the band’s famous “Snake Pit,” making them feel like they are in the front row or standing on stage.
An advanced shooting method was used to make the concert film. Cameras hung from cables moved smoothly above the crowd, dolly systems were placed on the stage and controlled by remote, and cameras were stabilised to make sure the images were smooth and lively. These techniques worked together to show the energy and excitement of Metallica’s live show from different points of view.
Metallica is putting out a new live EP called Metallica Live from Mexico City along with the VR performance film. This recording also comes from the same show in Mexico City and will be available from March 14. The EP uses spatial audio technology to make hearing more realistic, which adds to the sensory experience of the VR film.
Lars Ulrich, the drummer for Metallica, recently talked about the band’s experience making the interactive project at the South by Southwest (SXSW) conference. He said the whole process was fun and challenging, especially the editing part and the unique experience of exploring the VR world. Ulrich talked about how strange it felt to be able to move his head around while watching the live film. He called the mix of sound and images “crazy” and “highly exciting.”
They got good reviews for their 2023 European tour dates, giving them a four-star grade from NME. The review praised Metallica for continuing to put on high-energy shows that appeal to both long-time fans and people who have never heard of them before. People said that the last song, “Master of Puppets,” really got people excited. Other songs, like “Nothing Else Matters” and “Seek & Destroy,” showed how well the band could balance emotional depth with strong stage presence.
Along with their live shows, Metallica’s record 72 Seasons also got good reviews. NME gave the record four stars and called it a “thrilling sonic attack” that shows the band can keep pushing the limits of music.
After the VR film and EP come out, Metallica will continue their tour. Later this spring, they have a number of shows planned in North America. Support bands like Pantera and Limp Bizkit will play at the future shows, making the already-exciting live events even more exciting.
Metallica has shown that they are flexible and committed to giving fans new ways to experience their music with the release of their realistic VR live film and new EP. Working with Apple shows that they are serious about accepting new technology while keeping their unique energy and personality.
