Google-Samsung XR Headset Leak Reveals Key Features
In a significant development for the extended reality (XR) sector, new technical data has emerged regarding a collaborative project between Google and Samsung. The headset, internally dubbed Project Moohan, has resurfaced following months of silence, with recently uncovered benchmark results shedding light on its potential capabilities. This comes at a time when major technology firms are intensifying their efforts to innovate in the field of virtual and augmented reality, two pillars of the broader XR landscape. The Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chip supports colour-based augmented reality, integrates Wi-Fi 7 for reduced latency, and includes built-in features like Space Warp, which stabilises the image to help mitigate motion-induced discomfort. These specifications suggest that the device is being fine-tuned for fluid, responsive performance in both virtual and augmented environments. Complementing this, the headset is reportedly equipped with 16GB of RAM and runs on a specialised version of Android 14 adapted for XR functionality. This combination is expected to enable the smooth rendering of interactive digital content, whether it appears as an overlay on the real world or forms part of a wholly virtual scene.
A prototype of the headset was demonstrated to members of the media during the Google I/O 2025 conference. Among the most notable innovations was the integration of Google’s Gemini artificial intelligence. This AI capability enables the headset to process and respond to environmental stimuli in real-time. For example, during a demonstration, the system successfully identified a tree and promptly displayed relevant botanical information about the species.
The joint effort between Google and Samsung is aimed at producing a multifunctional device capable of toggling between virtual and augmented reality experiences with minimal disruption. Sources suggest that the headset is scheduled for release in the second half of 2025.
