A report indicates that Apple is testing four different design options for a forthcoming smart glasses product, as it explores a potential new hardware category following the MacBook Neo. The device is expected to compete with products developed in partnership between Meta and Ray-Ban, with indications that an announcement could take place before the end of the year.

Bloomberg reports that the company is evaluating multiple frame styles as part of its early development. These reportedly include a large oval or circular design and a smaller version of a similar shape. In addition, the company is testing a large rectangular frame comparable to standard Wayfarer styles. A slimmer rectangular option resembling eyewear currently used by the company’s chief executive is also under consideration.

The frames are expected to be designed internally rather than through an external fashion collaboration. The materials under consideration include acetate rather than plastic, which is associated with improved durability and a more premium finish.

Earlier development efforts had focused on producing a lighter version of the Vision Pro headset. However, priorities shifted towards smart glasses around October of the previous year. The device is currently identified by the codename N50. It is not expected to include an in-lens display, distinguishing it from certain Meta Ray-Ban models that incorporate display technology, and placing it closer in function to screen-free versions of those glasses.

Developments related to the company’s voice assistant have also been noted alongside the hardware plans. Enhancements to Siri, incorporating artificial intelligence capabilities, were demonstrated at the company’s developer conference in 2024. The updated version is expected to be released during the year as part of iOS 27, following earlier delays and legal challenges.

The timeline for the smart glasses remains uncertain. The report indicates that an announcement could occur before the end of the year, with broader availability projected for the following year. Separately, the company is also expected to introduce its first foldable iPhone within the same general timeframe.
