Qualcomm Joins AR Alliance to Promote Innovation in Augmented Reality

As the last original member of the AR Alliance’s board of directors, Qualcomm Technologies has formally joined the organisation. Qualcomm now has the same founding board members as Google, STMicroelectronics, META, Corning, Dispelix, Optofidelity, and Essilor Luxottica. The purpose of the AR Alliance is to provide organisations with a cooperative platform to propel the development of augmented reality technology, with an emphasis on creating wearables and other devices that improve user experiences.

Bharath Rajagopalan, the head of strategic marketing at STMicroelectronics and chair of the AR Alliance, underlined the enormous potential and promise of AR inside the sector. He emphasised how the founding members are cooperating to advance augmented reality while pointing out that there is plenty of space for all member firms to work together. The alliance is committed to harmonising strategies in order to accelerate innovation and develop, unite, and extend the global AR supply chain. Considering Qualcomm Technologies’ vast expertise, cutting-edge technology, and in-depth understanding of the market, their involvement in the partnership is considered a major contribution. Their provision of platforms facilitates the creation of applications, hence augmenting the ecosystem of AR devices.

Qualcomm and culinary tech firm Kittch have teamed up in a noteworthy partnership to create AR-enabled glasses that walk users through the cooking process. This collaboration, which was unveiled at the Santa Clara, California, 2023 Augmented World Expo, uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon platform to add augmented reality elements to Kittch’s current cooking software.

A multi-year deal with Meta, signed in 2022, further solidifies Qualcomm’s dominance in the AR and VR industries by designating Qualcomm as the exclusive chip vendor for Meta’s virtual reality headsets. The two companies have worked together on other projects in the past; Qualcomm chips power Meta’s consumer-level VR headsets, which were once sold under the Oculus name. The Quest headset is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2 CPU, which is noteworthy.
