Brighton Police Deploy Virtual Reality Training Technology
The Brighton Police Department has introduced cutting-edge virtual reality training equipment to revolutionise officer preparation and enhance operational effectiveness. The department showcased the newly acquired technology during a demonstration session conducted on 25th July at their Elmwood Avenue headquarters.
The force secured £688,000 in grant funding from the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services, specifically designated for law enforcement technology enhancement. Officials allocated approximately £63,000 of these funds towards acquiring virtual reality training systems from InVeris Training Solutions, marking a significant investment in modernising police training methodologies.
Captain Timothy Karch emphasised the practical advantages of implementing in-house virtual reality training capabilities. The department can now conduct comprehensive training sessions within its own facilities, eliminating the logistical challenges previously associated with external training arrangements.
During the demonstration, officers utilised sophisticated equipment, including gas-powered pellet guns fitted with electronic sensors and calibrated headsets synchronised with computer systems. A designated trainer operated the virtual environment whilst the participating officer engaged with realistic scenarios designed to replicate field conditions.
Captain Karch acknowledged that virtual reality technology remains in its developmental stages within police training applications, but expressed optimism about future advancements. He highlighted the system’s flexibility, noting that trainers possess virtually unlimited creative control over scenario development. The technology enables trainers to programme avatars with specific behaviours and dialogue, tailoring each training session to achieve particular learning objectives.
The virtual reality system presents officers with challenging scenarios requiring immediate decision-making skills. During demonstrations, officers navigated situations involving armed individuals refusing compliance commands, whilst maintaining communication with trainers who provided radio-style instructions mimicking real-world operational conditions.
The department recognises significant cost-saving benefits associated with virtual reality training implementation. Traditional training methods previously required hiring role-players and securing appropriate venues, creating substantial logistical and financial burdens. The virtual reality system eliminates these requirements by generating any necessary environment digitally.
Recording capabilities represent another valuable feature of the new training system. Officers can review their performance immediately following scenario completion, enabling detailed analysis of decision-making processes and tactical approaches. This documentation proves invaluable for improving report-writing skills and preparing officers for potential court testimony requirements.
Captain Karch confirmed that every department member will participate in virtual reality training sessions, ensuring consistent exposure to advanced simulation technology across the force. The comprehensive training programme aims to standardise response protocols whilst allowing officers to experience diverse scenarios safely.
The remaining grant funding supported additional technological upgrades, including drone acquisition, licence plate reading systems, and updated computer software for daily operational requirements. These investments demonstrate the department’s commitment to embracing modern technology solutions across multiple operational areas.
