New Google mixed reality glasses rumoured to launch in 2024. Insiders claim the hardware looks as simple as a pair of ski glasses.
According to a recent report published in The Verge, tech giant Google is currently working on its own AR glasses. The device will reportedly have the capability to blend virtual reality over the physical world and produce a unique mixed reality experience. The rumoured design will feature dual outward-facing cameras with the capability of projecting digital graphics over the real-world environment, much like the design of Snap Spectacle 3 AR glasses.
As per the report, the project is codenamed Project Iris. Sources also claim that the new device will be powered by Google’s data center in rendering content from remote locations. Further, it will beam the projection to the headset via a strong, seamless internet connection. This unique feature will allow the glasses to operate independently, without having to rely on an external power source such as a smartphone or dedicated PC.
The Verge also claims that several notable members from the Pixel team might be involved in this project in the capacity of developing certain crucial pieces of hardware. However, no detailed information in this regard has been received yet from the company. The rumours indicate that a group of around 300 people is currently working on the development of Project Iris from a secret facility located somewhere near the San Fransico Bay Area. More recruitment is under process at this point.
The brand-new mixed reality glasses from Google are expected to release in 2024, the same time as Project Starline would launch. The latter is a revolutionary chat booth by Google which was announced last year. Rumour has it the pilot project for Project Starline is already underway involving several Fortune 500 companies. Following the ground-breaking innovations, it is expected that the use of holographic technology will revolutionise next-generation communications, and subsequently the devices used for the task.
Google has a long, rich history when it comes to immersive technology. As of today, it is one of the leading forces and pioneers in the field of AR/ VR innovations. The stepping stone was laid back in 2014 when the company first released its first iteration of Google Cardboard—an affordable head-mounted display device specifically designed for mobile VR. The legacy was continued by Google Daydream View released in 2016. It was an updated mobile VR headset compatible with the Pixel devices from Google. If the rumours are to be believed, then the tech giant is expanding its horizons beyond VR and now marking its invasion in the field of AR with the new mixed reality glasses. According to some experts, this will also be Google’s redemption from the ill-fated Google Glasses released in 2013, which was met with an astonishingly underwhelming reception.
Apart from the alleged claims from so-called insiders and media speculations, no concrete information or specification has been provided by Google regarding the rumoured mixed reality glasses.
