Following the leads of Walmart and Crate & Barrel, Pinterest joins the AR home shopping wagon.
Pinterest announced its latest attempt at AR earlier this week. The leading photo-sharing app revealed that they are introducing a plethora of brand-new Try-On features for home décor shopping from select US retail chains. Users can now use a compatible iOS or Android device to choose from a wide range of virtual furniture as well as home décor items and check out how they fit in their home by placing a true-to-life AR replica in real-world space.
This, however, is not the first attempt at AR by Pinterest. The photo-sharing application released its try-on feature for the first time back in 2021. However, it primarily focused on the beauty industry. Consumers could try various shades of eye shadow and lipstick using this feature before they purchased the item. Since the launch, the company was very cautious regarding any other AR offerings, which makes the recent announcement even more exciting. Now, the same technology is being used to purchase furniture. With this update, Pinterest is expanding its try-on feature into the home décor market.
The new “Try On for Home Décor” is an AR-powered feature that allows consumers to place digital copies of various interior decoration items such as lamps, sofas, and storage units in real-world space using their smartphones. The replicas will be life-size, enabling the users to check how the items will fit in the designated space. Users can access this AR feature via the Pinterest mobile app, which contains a dedicated “Lens” option to activate it. Here is how you get started with this feature:
- Open the Pinterest mobile app via an Android or iOS device.
- Start by browsing home décor products.
- Go to the icon of three dots located in the top right corner of the Pin to see whether they have the try-on feature
- If it is try-on enabled, select the option “Try in Your Space” to place it in your real-world space.
- Adjust the virtual replica to fit in the designated space.
- Click the Pin to go to the checkout page.
- Confirm your order and complete the transaction to purchase the real-world product.
Starting this week, users can access a wide catalogue of digital furniture from renowned US retailers such as IKEA, Crate & Barrel, West Elm, CB2, Wayfair, and Walmart. The collection features over 80,000 shoppable Pins, which is approximately 66,000 more items than the previous Try-On beauty feature. This makes the home décor try-on Pinterest’s largest shoppable investment to date.
The company states that this effort is an attempt to turn more casual browsing behaviours into effective retail transactions. This was also the original focus of the application. Last year, Pinterest introduced Idea Pins—the video-based shopping leads to keep up with the changing market trends. The try-on feature takes the attempt to its next level, where it utilises cutting-edge AR technology to serve its users.
Try-On for Home Décor is now available on both Android and iOS devices via PlayStore and Apple Store respectively.
