upGrad Joins Forces with EyeWay Vision to Develop AR-powered Immersive Learning Experience

upGrad X Eyevision
upGrad, the leading online higher education firm based in India announces its partnership with Israeli company EyeWay Vision to pilot an AR-based immersive learning experience. upGrad provides more than 100 programs across numerous topics including technology, data science, marketing, management, law, and arts. The AR learning program, to be made available on upGrad’s platform, is expected to improve engagement and interactivity among its numerous students located all over the world.

The Two Focus Points

Phalgun Kompalli, the co-founder of upGrad told that their firm has duly identified two major areas for the proposed pilot. The first one is their programs of machine learning and data science programs. He also pointed out that these two are upGrad’s core strengths. Currently, the number of students in these two programs is way higher than any other topic, and therefore, these will effectively serve as a good base for the test run. upGrad offers dedicated courses on big data learning and data visualization under these prorams, which Kompalli believes would naturally extend itself to support the proposed technology of augmented reality.

The second major area for upGrad is driving peer-to-faculty as well as peer-to-peer interaction on their platform. According to Kompalli, the trickiest part of online education is constant, meaningful engagement with other participants, since interacting only with your computer during the course will soon become boring. This is why upGrad always try to enable faculties and students to interact seamlessly.

upGrad was founded in 2015 by a group of young techies, including Phalgun Kompalli, Mayank Kumar, Ronnie Screwvala, and Ravijot Chugh. Currently, it has tie-ups with 20 universities in and outside India, including IIM Kozhikode, IIT Madras, Deakin Business School in Australia, Michigan State University in the US, Liverpool John Moores University in the UK among many others. It claims to have over 1 million students worldwide across different subjects and topics. Among them, around 50,000 students are paying users. The firm recorded an astonishing annual revenue rate of $165 million for the fiscal year 2021.

Eyeway Vision, a tech company from Israel, reported that partnering with upGrad is the perfect opportunity for them to apply their exclusive augmented reality technology. The company stated that their technology will enhance the entire learning experience by making it distraction-free and more immersive. Nikhil Balram, the CEO of EyeWay Vision stated that their AR technology uses direct retinal projection, foveated projection, and hand tracking to produce an improved visual enhancement.

EyeWay has previously collaborated with Verizon, Samsung, and ICONIQ Capital as their investors. Apart from the immersive learning experience, they are also developing an AR-based head-mounted-display prototype, which is hoped to be available within the fourth quarter of 2021. This prototype will reportedly be used to enable its users to experience immersive learning at a later stage and will be developed by upGrad and its content associates.

Digital Environment

Kompalli reported that the project is still in its initial phase. However, he believes that incorporating augmented reality into online learning will be a persuasive application and would create an engaging, immersive learning experience for students learning in the digital environment.
