A chance to peek inside Notre Dame de Paris through AR

On the Bund in Shanghai, a recently launched free augmented reality exhibit featuring a digital twin of Notre Dame de Paris. This artwork was established in order to foster cultural links between China and France.

The world-famous Notre-Dame cathedral has been brought to life with the use of augmented reality (AR) and three-dimensional (3D) technology.

The exhibition known as Notre-Dame de Paris — the Augmented Exhibition was opened in France by the company Histovery in collaboration with the government agency responsible for the conservation and restoration of Notre-Dame de Paris, which was evacuated after a devastating fire in 2019.

Visitors are provided with a tablet PC that may be used to scan a “time portal,” which is analogous to a QR code and is located in front of a collection of prints, pictures, and 3D models. This allows them to have a visual experience of Notre Dame.

Visitors are welcome to investigate the layout and construction of the site, and they may also participate in activities related to the key historical events that took place there.

The interactive components are designed with the intention of making it easier for visitors to comprehend the history of Notre Dame. They can also inspect some of the restoration work being done on the historical structure.

The display was constructed over the course of two years, as stated by Morgan Fourdrigniez, the representative of Histovery in China. This was done to guarantee that the tablet PC, known as the HistoPad, appropriately replicated the historical look of Notre Dame. The event’s organizers want there to be more opportunities to engage in interactive activities at historical sites and museums all around the world.

Fourdrigniez says that the scientific committee that worked on the building was made up of eight experts in different fields, such as history, art history, and others.

The exhibition is both an eye-catching example of how modern technology can be used to bring historical sites back to life and a look at how cultural ties between China and France are getting stronger.

According to Fourdrigniez, not only is Notre Dame de Paris a valuable example of human civilisation, but it is also an important component of the cultural inheritance of France.

The United Arab Emirates, the United States of America, Germany, and a number of other countries all played host to the exhibition before it made its way to Asia. It is predicted that Japan will be the next destination after a stop in Shanghai.

Fourdrigniez says that to increase the cultural exchange between China and France, Histovery is actively looking for chances to show in new places in China.

The event in Shanghai, which is open to the public until January 2 and is the traveling exhibition’s first stop in Asia, takes people on a trip through time and space. It also includes accounts of the 850-year-old history of the cathedral and its rebirth.
